The City and County of Honolulu is constructing a new $350M sewer tunnel and influent pumping station in windward Oahu to protect public health and water quality in Kailua and Kaneohe Bays.  The new 3-mile long, 10-ft-diameter tunnel and 45-mgd pumping station will convey and store daily and peak wet weather flows and protect the existing regional treatment plant from hydraulic overload.  This presentation will explore the engineering and construction challenges associated with and creativity needed for such a significant regional wastewater infrastructure project.  So do you think engineering is only about applied math and science? Ray Matasci is Senior Vice President and Pacific Area Leader for Brown and Caldwell, which is a 1400-person national environmental consulting engineering company.  He has about 35 years of environmental consulting experience that has spanned research, planning, design, and construction of wastewater, drinking water, stormwater, and solid waste facilities in California, Hawaii, and Guam.  He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from U.C. Davis and his M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Cornell University.
